Quando si dice rimanere di sasso. Nel cuore dell'Inghilterra più suggestiva, nel nord dello Yorkshire, si trova un luogo dove davvero si può rimanere pietrificati. E non dalla bellezza o dalla magia del posto. Sì il panorama, sulle rive del fiume Nidd è pregno di atmosfera, ma c’è un qualcosa in più a renderlo unico al mondo. Si tratta di un pozzo che trasforma gli oggetti in pietra. Tutto quello che viene a contatto con le gocce che scivolano via dal bordo della cascatella rimane appunto lì, di sasso. Non avviene subito, ci vogliono un po’ di giorni, a volte settimane. Ma nel giro di pochi mesi al massimo ecco che le foglie, i rami caduti, anche qualche uccello rimasto impigliato, tutto si pietrifica. Anche cose d’uso quotidiano, perdute o lasciate lì per caso, una pentola, un pupazzo, un ciondolo, un sonaglio. Oppure una bicicletta. Luogo infestato dai fantasmi? Crocicchio magico o base di creature aliene dove fare esperimenti terrestri? Per molto tempo gli abitanti dei dintorni lo hanno ritenuto maledetto anche per l’aspetto un po’ sinistro del pozzo che a ben guardarlo poteva assomigliare a una specie di grande teschio. E nessuno si azzardava a toccare l’acqua temendo di restare pietrificato anch’esso. Anche se esistono dei documenti antichi che invece ne vantano le proprietà curative. Leggende o storie che siano, gli scienziati hanno fatto luce su questo strano, affascinante fenomeno: l’acqua in questione conterrebbe un elevatissino contenuto di minerali, soprattutto di calcite, così alto al punto da riuscire ad avvolgere le cose con cui viene a contatto. Se l’oggetto è di materiale poroso il rivestimento si crea in poco tempo, qualche settimana. Altrimenti occorre aspettare un po’ di più, anche un anno. Ma prima o poi l'insolita scultura naturale viene scolpita.
