Nella città di Kansas City, una di quelle coperte dal servizio Fiber, Google offrirà connettività a 1 Gbps gratuita ai residenti degli alloggi popolari.

Con il progetto Google Fiber, il gruppo di Mountain View ha messo in campo un’iniziativa finalizzata ad offrire un accesso a Internet estremamente rapido con prezzi piuttosto accessibili. Oggi la società annuncia l’intenzione di rendere disponibile in modo del tutto gratuito il servizio a coloro che alloggiano nelle case popolari raggiunte dalla rete.
Si parla di connettività con una banda da 1 Gbps, pura utopia per molti paesi, compreso il nostro. Si inizierà con i residenti di Kansas City, una delle prime comunità coperte da Fiber, dove il programma arriverà a interessare un totale di nove complessi abitativi in cui risiedono circa 1.300 famiglie. Per loro l’accesso alla Rete con l’infrastruttura di Google sarà del tutto gratis, altrimenti la spesa da sostenere è pari a 70 dollari ogni mese. Un esborso economico non dei più contenuti, ma senza dubbio estremamente vantaggioso se lo si rapporta con i prezzi e con la banda attualmente messa a disposizione dagli operatori nostrani.

Non è tutto: oltre a poter usufruire senza costi di 1.000 Mbps sia in download che in upload, gli interessati riceveranno un dispositivo da posizionare in casa che funge da router WiFi e 1 TB di spazio sulla piattaforma Google Drive per lo storage dei propri documenti e contenuti. Va inoltre precisato che, nelle aree coperte del servizio, chiunque può da tempo sfruttare una connessione da 5 Mbps senza alcuna spesa mensile, affrontando però un’installazione iniziale dal costo di 300 dollari.
L’iniziativa di bigG si inserisce nel programma ConnectHome promosso negli Stati Uniti dalla Casa Bianca e dal Department of Housing and Urban Development, con l’obiettivo di favorire l’accesso a Internet da parte delle famiglie con bambini in età scolastica. Altri progetti finanziati dal gruppo di Mountain View mirano alla creazione di laboratori in cui diffondere la cultura informatica e organizzare corsi di alfabetizzazione digitale.
