The nanoparticles, large less than a thousandth of a red blood cell, would be able to try and latch on to cells, proteins or other molecules in the human body, and would be monitored with a wearable device with a magnet to attract them and count them.
Speaking at the Digital Live Conference of the Wall Street Journal, the molecular biologist Conrad explained that the aim is to provide an early warning system for diseases in order to intervene with a more effective treatment, transforming medicine from reactive to proactive. The nanoparticles, on which have to work over a hundred experts in disciplines ranging from astrophysics to chemistry electrical engineering, may be administered orally through a pill.
One of the challenges is to identify coatings that help the particles to bind to specific cells, such as cancer cells. Nanoparticles are just one of the studies on which the Life Sciences team is at work. Among other projects we are mapping the human body to get a 'photograph' more precise and detailed as possible as it has a healthy body, and smart contact lenses to measure glucose in the tears of patients with diabetes.
