Prima o poi doveva succedere. La generazione della auto a guida autonoma segna la sua prima vittima: un ex marine che si trovava al volante di una Tesla Model S ha perso la vita in un incidente mortale.
I fatti risalgono al 7 maggio scorso (anche se l’ente nazionale per il traffico americano NHTSA ha tenuto la cosa nascosta per effettuare un’inchiesta), giorno in cui il 40enne Joshua D. Brown ha deciso di lasciare il volante della sua Tesla S mentre viaggiava su un’autostrada in Florida inserendo l’autopilota: mentre lui, un ex marine, guardava un film di Harry Potter, la sua auto è andata a schiantarsi contro un tir che viaggiava sulla corsia opposta e stava svoltando a sinistra. E così il primo incidente mortale di un’auto a guida autonoma è ormai triste realtà.
“Andava talmente veloce”, ha raccontato il 62enne conducente del tir, Frank Baressi, “che si è infilato sotto il rimorchio senza che riuscissi neanche a vederlo”. La Tesla ha sottolineato che si tratta del primo incidente mortale in oltre 130 milioni di miglia percorse con l’autopilota, spiegando sul suo sito web che ad ingannare il sistema è stato il colore del tir: il lato bianco, perpendicolare all’auto, non sarebbe stato distinto dal cielo che in quel momento era particolarmente luminoso. In soldoni, sensori e telecamere hanno confuso la fiancata chiara del mezzo con il cielo, non rilevando l’ostacolo.
“Circostanze rare”, dicono dalla Tesla, che tuttavia hanno prodotto un mix fatale. Il costruttore tiene comunque a precisare che l’Autopilot è una funzione d’assistenza che non si sostituisce completamente al guidatore. Quest’ultimo, dunque, deve sempre tenere le mani sul volante ed essere pronto a intervenire in situazioni di emergenza che la vettura segnala con allarmi visivi e acustici. Si tratta tecnicamente di una modalità di guida semi-automatica, per cui l’intervento umano risulta ancora determinante e non eludibile: “non è perfetta e quindi richiede sempre al conducente di rimanere all’erta. Tuttavia, sicuramente riduce il carico di lavoro del guidatore e migliora la sicurezza rispetto alla guida manuale”.
Parole di dolore e commozione solo state spese dal patron Elon Musk per la morte di “un amico di Tesla, una persona che ha speso la sua vita per l’innovazione e la promessa della tecnologia, e che ha creduto fortemente nella nostra missione”. Il cui futuro, in attesa degli sviluppi aperta nel frattempo dalle autorità americane, pare ancora più incerto.
