The Mediterranean diet is the best elixir of life. Everyone knows that fruits, vegetables, legumes, cereals and fresh fish are the most valuable allies to stay young for a long time (even in the brain), because they act at the level of individual cells, preventing spoilage: now an Italian research explains why this it is possible, revealing the precise mechanisms by which balanced, balanced diet has a powerful anti-aging effect. The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, was conducted by a group of researchers from the Department of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the Second University of Naples led by Giuseppe Paolisso, president of the Italian Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics (Sigg).

Doctors studied 217 elderly people, dividing them into groups according to adhesion more or less close to the Mediterranean diet, and then analyzing the white blood cells. "We looked at telomeres, the terminal part of the chromosomes which we know is a kind of 'clock' cell," explains Paolisso, "each cell division are getting shorter until you get to a critical threshold, beyond which they can no longer decrease; It is at this point that aside disenescenza cellular process. We already knew that the Mediterranean diet is 'opposed' to the shortening of the telomeres, so we went to assess the telomeres in white blood cells of study participants to understand whether and especially how nutrition affects their length. "

The results clearly show that a balanced diet influences the activity of telomerase, the enzyme that allows you to "build" the telomeres, preventing the shortening. "The relationship of cause and effect has become clear: the more the subjects followed a Mediterranean diet, the more active the enzyme appeared" continues Paolisso. "Having identified that this '' cellular switch acting nutrients of a healthy balanced diet, as they are abundant fruits, vegetables, legumes, fresh fish and foods low in fat, highlights the mechanism that allows the Mediterranean diet to promote longevity and is further evidence of the strong anti-aging ability of the Mediterranean diet, it can now feel a real drug. But be careful: the effect is achieved with a balanced mix of different nutrients. The same advantages seem not reachable through supplements of minerals and vitamins, as associated to recreate as much as possible the 'cocktail' that emerges from a healthy diet ".
However, there is a substance that acts on the telomerase activating it: already on the market in the United States as a supplement, is still in clinical trials to assess accurately the effects. "For the moment, though, the only sure way to slow aging is to adhere to the principles of the Mediterranean diet, bringing to the table every day dishes of our rich tradition of valuable nutrients," concludes Paolisso.
