Per il direttore scientifico dell'Istituto dei Tumori di Milano, Marco Pierotti, potrebbe essere "una goccia di speranza". Ma ci vorranno ancora molti anni.

Ma questa "erba magica" è davvero così efficace?

"Si tratta di studi interessanti e che hanno un fondamento" spiega a Panorama.it  Marco Pierotti, direttore scientifico dell'Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori di Milano . "Anche se a prima vista si potrebbe pensare ad una di quelle notizie da lasciar perdere, esistono studi in proposito fin dal 2001, mentre quello più recente risale al 2011, quando sono stati condotti esperimenti in vitro".

Come funziona l'Artemisia Annua?

Questa erba era usata nella medicina cinese, poi venne dimenticata per un lungo periodo, fino a quando negli anni '70 si ritrovarono manoscritti che ne indicavano l'uso come antimalarico. Diciamo che può dare degli effetti positivi là dove c'è un'alta concentrazione di ferro, situazione che si verifica in alcuni tipi di tumore (non tutti, però), per garantire la rapida riproduzione delle cellule tumorali, sulle quali questa erba risulta "tossica". Insomma, non si tratta di una sorta veleno di scorpione...

Insomma, non è proprio una "bufala", ma cosa dicono gli studi in proposito?

L'ultimo lavoro, come accennato, risale al 2011 quando una company, che detiene un "mezzo brevetto", ha creato in laboratorio una molecola sintetica che riproduce gli effetti dell'erba. Al momento dunque esistono dati sperimentali in vitro, ma perché si possa davvero usare il principio alla base dell'azione dell'Artemisia Annua ci vorranno ancora diversi passaggi, dalle procedure su animali fino alle sperimentazioni cliniche. Insomma, occorrono ancora anni.

Cosa bisogna pensare allora della notizia dell'efficacia di questa erba?

L'atteggiamento corretto è partire dal presupposto che il cancro è una malattia complicata, dovuta alla complessità del nostro organismo e al fatto che la vita media si è allungata. Dunque non bisogna assumere un atteggiamento di chiusura verso eventuali cure non convenzionali, purché queste siano razionali e rispettino la metodologia della comunità scientifica. Il caso Stamina, ad esempio, dimostra che forse i 3 milioni di euro destinati alla sperimentazione sono stati tolti ad un'altra cura con la quale si potevano salvare delle vite.

Dunque non resta che aspettare?

Esatto, non resta che aspettare, perché la cura con l'erba Artemisia non è al momento una cura disponibile: possiamo considerarlo come un farmaco in via di sviluppo, una goccia di speranza, dal momento che ogni giorno in Italia si diagnosticano mille casi di cancro.
