Step forward for DTT, Divertor Tokamak Test Facility, the € 500 million project to build a strategic nuclear fusion research infrastructure in Italy. After the resolution approved by the X Committee of the Chamber (Productive Activities, Trade and Tourism) which commits the Government to take initiatives for the realization of the project in Italy, also EUROfusion (EUROfusion is a European consortium for nuclear fusion research which consists of 29 research institutions from 27 countries The consortium manages and finances research activities in the field of nuclear fusion on behalf of Euratom) has kicked off the final phase to fund the project.
"This is a confirmation of the commitment of Parliament and Government in the direction of encouraging the localization of frontier research infrastructures in our country, which can have great repercussions on the business fabric and for the consolidation of excellent production chains", underlined Federico Testa , President of ENEA. "With an investment of 500 million coming mainly from EU and international funds, it will be possible to create a scientific-technological center of excellence with about 2 thousand employees that will develop innovative technologies for the competitiveness of the national industry, with scientific, economic and training and employment of young people ", concluded Testa.
The Divertor Tokamak Test facility was created at the instigation of ENEA in collaboration with CNR, INFN, CREATE (Research Consortium for Energy, Automation and Electromagnetism Technologies) and some of the most prestigious leading Italian universities and companies in the sector.
The aim of the Divertor Tokamak Test Facility
This large Italian scientific laboratory, considered the link between the major ITER and DEMO nuclear fusion projects, will provide crucial scientific, technical and technological answers aimed at solving one of the major problems of the fusion process, the disposal of energy in the reactors fusion. In fact, after Iter the problems concerning the management of the large flows of power produced by the fuel plasma and the materials to be used as containers will remain to be addressed.
The technology made in Italy at the base of DTT will be the same used for ITER, but with the possibility to perform tests also using techniques patented by ENEA: in fact DTT will test innovative magnetic configurations and new materials such as liquid metals.
The "numbers" of DTT
In this 10-meter high-tech cylinder with radius 5, 33 m3 of plasma will be confined and brought to a temperature of 100 million degrees with a current intensity of 6 million amperes, a thermal load on materials up to 50 million watts for square meter and a magnetic field intensity of 60 thousand Gauss. While the plasma "heated" by the Joule effect will work at a temperature of millions of degrees, the 26 km of superconducting cables in niobium and tin and the 16 km of those in niobium and titanium, only a few tens of centimeters away, will be at 269 ° C below zero.
Thanks to the latest generation superconducting materials made by ENEA in collaboration with the industry, DTT will be able to work with a high magnetic field so as to minimize conductor dissipation and confine plasmas with high power and energy density.
"DTT represents a major technological challenge for our country that will generate a turnover of 2 billion euros and redevelop the national industrial fabric," said Flavio Crisanti, Scientific Manager of the project. "Now, with this decision of EUROfusion, the engineering phase begins that will outline the constructive structure of the project in view of its presentation next July in the workshop that EUROfusion will organize in Frascati. We hope that stage 3 of the project, the implementation phase, will begin in December, when we expect to have the funds available from the Italian Government and the European Commission ".

The role of ENEA

ENEA provides a significant contribution to the main international research programs on fusion (ITER, DEMO and Broader Approach) and is one of the main partners of the EUROfusion and Fusion for Energy (F4E) European agencies.
At national level, ENEA is the reference point in the ITER project, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, an experimental reactor being built in France, in Cadarache, as part of a collaboration between Europe, Japan, the United States, Russia, China, India and Korea. The Department of Fusion and Technologies of Nuclear Safety, with the Research Centers of Frascati and Brasimone, boasts professionalism and equipment of the highest level, recognized as excellence at an international level. ENEA scientists were among the first to create plants for the study of magnetic confinement plasmas, fusion machines such as Frascati Tokamak (FT) and Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU); the merger activities have generated over 50 patents over the last 20 years, with significant effects on the development and competitiveness of the national industries with contracts exceeding one billion euros.
"ENEA has always played a role of excellence in fusion research and with DTT Italy could capitalize on the skills and professionalism accumulated over years of study", commented Aldo Pizzuto, Head of the Fusion and Technology Department for the Nuclear Safety. "This is a unique opportunity for the environment too - adds Pizzuto - because the energy obtained from the fusion process is safe, inexhaustible and able to meet energy consumption in constant growth, and free from CO2 because it does not burn fossil fuels ".
