It is called exciton, and it is the new form of matter just found by the physicists of the universities of Illinois, California and Amsterdam. From the still unclear properties, it could help to unravel the mysteries of quantum mechanics.
They had already planned it 50 years ago but no one had yet found it. But now, thanks to an innovative technique, a team of researchers from the University of Illinois, together with colleagues from the University of California and the University of Amsterdam, announces from the pages of Science that it has produced the first experimental proof of real existence of the exciton, a strange state of matter that could help solve some puzzles of quantum mechanics.
"Since the term 'exciton' was coined in the 1960s by Harvard theoretical physicist Bert Halperin," commented University of Illinois physicist Peter Abbamonte, "physicists have been trying to prove his existence. The theoretical [physicists] discussed whether it could be an insulator, a perfect conductor or a superfluid, and there were compelling arguments on all fronts. Since the 1970s, many experimental [physicists] have published evidence of the existence of the exciton, but their findings were never conclusive evidence and could also be explained by a conventional structural phase transition ".
But what is exciton? Experts describe it as the first state of soft plasma ever observed, a precursor of a condensate of excitons, ie subatomic particles composed of an excited electron and its hole. In practice excitons are a particular type of low energy bosons that are created when in semiconductor materials an electron is - precisely - excited and jumps to the next energy level, leaving a hole in the previous energy level.
The fascinating thing is that the hole behaves like a positively charged particle attracting the electron and forming this strange quantum-mechanical coupling.
The existence of excitons had already been theorized half a century ago, but so far scientists had not been able to see them experimentally, or, better said, they could not be sure because they had too little precise instruments. The breakthrough came with the introduction of the technique called momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy (M-Eels), thanks to which the researchers were able to measure the trajectory of fleeing electrons independently of their momentum.
So here's the exciton, the proof that excitons really exist, that we do not yet know what it is, but now its properties can be studied in depth. Physicists argue that if it turns out to be a superconductor or a superfluid it could certainly be used to update existing technologies, but its potential is unpredictable at the moment. In fact, it is hoped that this will also lead to greater understanding of quantum phenomena, perhaps even solving some unresolved puzzles.
